I used to make a fair amount of money for my age. I used to like to throw it around because, hey, I could. At one point I bought an iMac on a whim. There wasn't really much reason for it. I was interested in OSX but that was just a fake reason. I just wanted one. Of course, I never really used it that much, at the time I think I had four computers and Stephanie had one. We were all networked, it was a geek's paradise. This last Christmas I decided to let my grandmother have the iMac. She's been curious about computers for a long time but has been scared to buy one. Like many people she's intimidated by the thought of breaking her computer. Of course she tried to turn down the gift but I could tell that she was truly touched. I think it was the first and possibly only time that I've ever given her anything meaningful for Christmas. So yesterday I got my first email from her. It was actually from my dad, but it was sent using her email account. For a long time she's just had her little casino games. She's now made the jump online. That's great. I'm really happy that I've helped her to open up to new possibilities. Hopefully she doesn't become as addicted to the internet as is her grandson. |
